I believe that you are already familiar with the computer part SSD. After experiencing its performance, you will feel amazed by its efficiency. Currently, SSDs feature its high speed, while HDDs are famous for its progressing storage. This makes it harder for solid-state hybrid drives (SSHD) to survive in this competitive market. How does it happen? What is the trend of the drive market? Let me tell you further about it.

What is a SSD?

SSDs are a NAND flash storage device. Its structure is very simple because it only has NAND flash and a control chip.

SSDs use non-volatile memory, which retains data even when power is off. Thus, it becomes a replacement for hard disk drives. SSD has three types of NAND flash, namely SLC, MLC, TLC.

What is an SSHD?

Solid State Hybrid Drives are an integrated merger between HDD and SSD into one drive. An SSHD combines a large amount of HDD storage and an optimal amount of SSD flash memory to accelerate read speed. This combination reduces boot time, application loading time, and overall system response time compared with HDDs.

Comparison Between SSHDs and SSDs

Performance: SSDs are much better

We used CrystalDiskMark and PRMark 7 to compare SSHDs and SSDs and tried to narrow down the difference of other computer specs in the experiment.

SSD’s score is 1.4 times as high as SSHD’s.

*SSDs overall yield the outstanding performance, but the margin of improvement in real-world tests for booting, launching and loading applications are not as drastic as the PCMark test suggested.

Time test of applications and boot time

Testing environment

Next, we would like to test how long boot time was and applications turned on with these physical devices as mentioned above. We used a stopwatch to record time even though it might cause a little inaccuracy.

Considering Windows’s SuperFetch, which enables often-accessed applications to run faster by reading from the RAM instead of the slow hard drive, whenever we finished a round of time test, we restart the system. Except that RootRacer is the data recorded for the fourth time, the rest are recorded for the third time.

To become realistic, our hardware started audio and connected to the Internet. It launched and loaded common applications and associated data, including Skype, LINE, Security Essentials, and DAEMON. Also, the installed Apple iTunes was imported with 29.9-GB audio.

Each of the primary partitions is adjusted to approximately 256 GB to avoid scattering data and saving latency.

Result: only slight difference between SSD and SSHD

The extent of the speed difference between SSD and SSHD depends on application storage. The larger application storage is, the larger the extent of the speed difference is. Take 2.5″ SSD and 3.5″ SSHD for example. The largest speed gaps are 23.6% tested by InDesign, 25% by Photoshop, 33.4% by Booting up. But actually, the difference is negligible and mostly 1~2 seconds. Also, we can see the performance gap between 2.5″ and 3.5″ SSHD is small.

In many articles, the cost per GB ratio a prominent quantifier for storage space based on price. Solid State Hybrid Drives (SSHD) gain a slightly higher score in the Cost/GB ratio compared with Solid State Drives (SSD). SSHD only offers a small amount of flash memory to enable users to experience SSD performance. It was literally impressive when it came out.

My advice would be…

So have you changed your thought about SSHD? SSDs are, of course, several times as expensive as SSHDs. However, its speed could be only 50% faster depending on applications. Also So you should not honor SSDs as a god of storage. And you should not look down on SSHDs, either. Rather, you decide which storage drive you should buy based on what type of application you frequently use on your computer.

Both of these storage devices are ideal options. Customers should consider many factors, including types of application, storage needs, budget, speed, etc. to decide what storage device is best for them.
