On September 20, NVIDIA finally released the GeForce RTX Founder's Edition, including RTX 2080 Ti, 2080, and 2070. The are priced respectively at 1,199, 799, and 599 USD. Is it really worth buying these new specs? I would like to compare their performance on games, prices, and spec to tell you if it is worthy. Performance comparison

Performance comparison between old applications and games

We used 3DMark and VRMark to observe the results of time spy in terms of GTX and RTX.  In addition, we played Assassin’s Creed Origins, HITMAN, Tom Clancy’s The Division to test the GPU's performance. Moreover, RTX 2080 Ti and 2080 adapt 12nm FFB manufacturing process with higher efficiency of heat spreading. As a reuslt, its temperature is lower than GTX 1080 Ti. To prove this, we test FurMark GPU stress for 10 minutes.

3DMark testing

In the result of 3DMark, we can see the RTX 2080 Ti performance in terms of Time Spy and Time Spy Extreme shows better potential than GTX 1080 Ti by 28 to 31%. It also performs better than RTX 2080 by 15 to 18%. Observing from this result, it can reveal outstanding performance when applied on 3D illustration.

VRMark testing

The graph of VRMark testing result explains Orange Room has the lowest burden while Blue Room does the opposite. You can see RTX 2080 Ti in Cyan Room and Blue Room runs faster than GTX 1080 Ti by 52 to 81% and faster than RTX 2080 by 30 to 35%. So presumably it can process more complicated scenes of VR and improve the image quality.

FurMark testing

In the testing result of FurMark temperature, we can discover RTX 2080, at the beginning, remains 33 °C. After RTX 2080 runs for 10 minutes, its temperature only rises to 72°C which is slightly higher than RTX 2080 Ti's temperature of 74°C. GTX 1080 Ti starting temperature (41°C) and 10-min-after tempertaure (85°C) are both higher than RTX series's. To sum up, NVIDIA RTX is fast, cool, and quite!

Assassin's Creed Origins testing

The result of tested GPUs in Full HD resolution shows no big difference between the three specs. When it comes to 2560*1440, however, RTX's performance becomes outstanding. RTX 2080 Ti and 2080 top GTX 1080 Ti performance by 21% and 9%.

HITMAN testing

When playing HITMAN in Full HD resolution, we cannot see an obvious performance difference among the specs. In 4K resolution,  RTX 2080 Ti's performance is better than GTX 1080 Ti's by over 30% and better than RTX 2080 by 30%.

Tom Clancy's The Division testing

In the game of Tom Clancy's The Division, you can see RTX 2080 Ti, as a whole, performs better than GTX 1080 Ti by 24 to 40%. And it runs faster than RTX 2080 by about 26 to 29%.

Performance comparison between new applications and games

NVIDIA provides or is about to release a variety of applications supporting ray tracing, DLSS, Mesh Shader, and other new tech functions. We select Final Fantasy XV and Shadow of the Tomb Raider to test RTX's and GTX's graphics card performance. We tested game's rate where consecutive images appearing on a 4K-res(3840*2160) display to manifest RTX performance. We notice that GeForce RTX 2080 Ti stably holds over 60 fps, which is faster by 30% to 50% than GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. With Turing GPU architecture supporting up to views per pass, GeForce RTX 2080 Ti's performance surpasses GeForce GTX 1080 Ti's.

Final Fantasy XV testing

Besides Temperoal Anti-Aliasing(TAA), NVIDIA launched Deep Learning Super Sampling(DLSS) to accelerate anti-aliasing by AI and to render a lower-resolution image upscale . RTX is able to deliver an image that is similar to the standard full-size image using about 50% of the shading power. We can see, from the graph, the GPUs in the mode of DLSS all perform faster than those in the mode of TAA by over 35%. And RTX 2080 Ti runs faster than 2080 by 25 to 26%. However, GTX 1080 Ti does not support DLSS, so it does not have the testing result of TAA. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLlYDCQsq84 Combined with the critical gap in hardware performance between the two GPU generations, Final Fantasy 15 shows an 80% leap with DLSS enabled between RTX 2080 Ti and GTX 1080 Ti .

Shadow of the Tomb Raider testing

Shadow of the Tomb Raider supports ray tracing allowing for greater graphical fidelity through lights and shadows that appear more realistic. We test the GPUs' performance and features in the mode of TAA. As you can see in the graph, RTX 2080 Ti performance is greater than GTX 1080 Ti by 33% and greater than RTX 2080 by 24%. RTX 2080 Ti can produce more rendered frames than 2080 by 22 to 23%. And as a whole RTX runs faster than GTX as shown in the graph.

Singapore price vs. International price

I would suggest you should buy GeForce RTX 2080 Ti or 2080 from the U.S. and Taiwan since its prices is lower there than those in Singapore. Although Geforce in the U.S is sold at lowest price worldwide, customers must pay, besides its original price, U.S. state tax. [table id=25 /] [table id=26 /] [table id=27 /]

Spec comparison

NVIDIA, this time, launched a consumer GPU series named Turing and changed GTX to RTX (R means ray-tracing). This dubbing means RTX aims to achieve operations as fast as ray-tracing. To accomplish this improvement, RTX's whole chip structure is reorganized and it is enhanced with more Shader and CUDA. The lately added RT Core (ray-tracing core) and Tensor Core (AI-dedicated core) satisfy the needs of image quality in games. From the generation of GTX to that of RTX, NVIDIA launches a new developer tool of GameWorks SDK. This tool is helpful for complicated real-time background light tracing, shadow mapping, and reflected light creation. [table id=28 /]

The new king of graphics card

If you are pursuing more sophisicated and more realistic game graphics, Raytracing is an indispensable feature for you. GeForce RTX 2080 Ti and 2080 launched by NVIDIA aims for 4K display market. So if you have needs for 4K games and 8K videos, RTX will always your best choice and prepare you for the raytracing games. However, AAA games supporting RTX's techniques are not popular yet (So far, there are 28 games in this market.) . So before you buy it, be sure if it is worth having such an expensive GPU for the games you would like to play.
