Double cleansing is the cornerstone of skincare – this simple change in your skincare regimen will change the way your skin look and feel in the long-term (think soft and flawless skin even without makeup). Not convinced? Let us explain why double cleansing is a must, and also how to do it correctly!
What is Double Cleansing?
Double cleansing actually means using 2 types of cleanser to properly remove impurities and effectively cleanse your skin. This way, the pores will be effectively cleaned, removing all environmental pollution that leads to bacterial growth. It will also prevent breakouts and maintain small pores for your face.
Why Double Cleanse?
Since water and oil won’t mix (remember your science class?) using water cleanser alone will not wash off the oil produced by our skin. Oil on our skin also attracts pollutants and dirt to stay inside our pores. Imagine, having your pores clogged up for a long time just like a toilet pipe – what will happen to your skin? We simply can’t imagine the horror!
Therefore, it’s always important to clean the face first with a balm or oil-based cleanser. It’s simply because cleansing balm and oil actually ‘melts’ away grease and waterproof substances effectively – such as makeup and sunscreen.
After you have cleared away the oil barrier, use a water-based (or glycerin-based) cleanser. It will now effectively penetrate the layers of skin without oil and grease in the way, allowing soluble dirt and impurities (such as sweat and grime, etc.) to be cleaned off properly.
How to Double Cleanse
Here are the steps to follow for double cleansing:
1.Place a dollop of cleansing oil or balm on your hand. Massage it on your face in gentle circular motions for about 45 seconds.
2. Wipe off the cleanser with a cloth that’s already soaked in water (preferably lukewarm water).
3. Gently massage a dollop of water-based facial cleanser onto your skin.
4. Finally, rinse off the cleanser with lukewarm water and pat dry. Now your face is squeaky clean!
How to Choose the Right Products
No matter how many ‘gurus’ or influencers might say that using a pure oil (such as coconut oil) is good enough, it’s actually NOT. We know that it’s tempting just to use pure oil off the kitchen counter due to convenience (and also for the budget) but if you love your skin – just don’t. Pure oil by itself can be very comedogenic and stubborn to clean off – which will lead to clogged pores, breakouts and in some cases cause extreme dryness. Therefore, it’s wise to use cleansing oil or balm designed specially for your face.
Shu Uemura Skin Purifier Porefinist Anti-Shine Fresh Cleansing Oil is a popular choice because it’s an ultra-light cleanser that cleans off even the most stubborn makeup and focuses on refining the pores and reducing blackheads. It also helps to curb oily skin, making your face anti-shine!

If you prefer something less oily, use a cleansing balm! The Eve Lom Cleanser is described as “‘probably the best cleanser in the world” by Vogue. This multi-award-winning cleansing balm is a blend of 4 plant oils (Clove, Eucalyptus, Hops and Egyptian Chamomile) that not only cleans really well but also gives you a glowing and smoother-looking skin.

For the next step, the water-based cleanser should be super gentle, pH balanced with little to no fragrance or alcohol. Since you’ve gotten rid of the stubborn stuff in the first step, there’s no need to use strong cleansers that might hurt your skin, especially if you have sensitive skin. Here are 2 recommended cleansers for the second cleaning process: Shiseido Ibuki Gentle Cleanser and Evanesce Purifying Cleanser.
Shiseido Ibuki Gentle Cleanser is a concentrated foam cleanser that creates a rich, smooth, and strong lather. It’s perfect to use a cleansing brush or device since it’s super smooth. It’s not widely available, so just get it here with the best offers 👇
Evanesce Purifying Cleanser is a premium cleanser, which will help purify clogged pores, remove harmful toxins from your epidermis and also reduces inflammation. It does not contain sodium laureth sulfate that is known to irritate the skin. Best of all, it’s known to show results of a better and smoother skin only after 7 days of usage! Though it’s not available locally, you can still get it here with the best price 👇
Before we end, here’s a real question: Is double-cleansing worth your time?
Since most of us are city dwellers, the probability of our skin being exposed to pollution only a daily basis is high. Which also explains why city people (apart from the stress) tend to age faster since pollution and environmental toxins are damaging our skin the moment we stepped out of the house. So, it’s a big YES to double cleansing. Besides, it takes no longer than 3 minutes just to wash your face twice!
