GoPro Hero 7 improved EIS electronic stabilization and thus attract many fans’ attraction and purchase. This time, GoPro7 rose to another level and its Hypersmooth performance is outstanding. Compared with DJI OSMO Pocket, what is its relative advantage and disadvantage? So I am going to explain the differences between GoPro Hero 7 Black and DJI OSMO Pocket.
These two portable cameras are enjoying a rise in popularity. They look like the same kind of products, but actually, after comparison, I think they are tailored to users with different needs. They can replace each others. So I will be based on view range, audio quality, stabilization, and recording quality, to compare these two models.

View Range – GoPro Hero 7 Black wins
GoPro Hero 7 Black has three view modes. One is the Field of View (Wide), which is a larger view and makes it perfect for wide-angle outdoors action shots to capture the subject and landscape. Another mode is Superview that is suitable for body and gear-mounted shots. The last mode is Linear offering a traditional camera angle.
OSMO Pocket‘s perspective is categorized as field of view and has 80 degrees FOV. It is a traditional and cinematic frame as standard.
I compared GoPro’s Field of View with OSMO Pocket as the above picture shows. The difference in width perspective is 133 degrees.
Audio quality – Osmo Pocket wins
Osmo Pocket sounds very good for voice. But its recording of ambient sounds is such a nuisance. But to achieve decent sound quality, it is required an external microphone.
The waterproof body of GoPro 7 makes its sounds muffled, especially for high tones. When it records in a noisy environment, its recording sounds will be in ruin.
Stabilization – Osmo Pocket wins
To objectively test the two models’ stabilization, we hold the cameras by hand without any extra stabilizer.
GoPro 7’s form of stabilization is HyperSmooth. It uses data from gyro sensors to detect how it rotates and to stabilize the footage in real time. However, the image would sacrifice 10% cropping for footage stabilization. But GoPro 7 has a wide lens, so the footage still looks wide.
This advantage comes along with two drawbacks. The biggest issue is that the lens is only wide, so fast movements won’t be stabilized till the camera stops moving so fast. The other drawback is that its EIS electronic stabilization does not work well in the dim environment. Therefore, motion blur caused by movements would be visible.
DJI Osmo Pocket features 3-axis gimbal, so it is therefore stable when held. It measures gyro data as GoPro 7 does and uses it to drive the three motors on the gimbal. But it doesn’t have digital stabilization problems GoPro 7 has.
We would like to present differences in colors and dynamic range when recording.
GoPro Hero 7 has the Protune controls for white balance, color, sharpness, and exposure. I turned on the Protune option and set white balance automatic, colors flat, and sharpness high. On the other hand, OSMO Pocket doesn’t have an advanced color setting, so I selected its default setting.
Color & dynamic range – GoPro Hero 7 Black wins
Obviously, the colors on these two images look different, but what is the difference exactly? The first one is that GoPro Hero 7 is more saturated. The other one you unlikely notice is that Osmo Pocket has slightly more dynamic range.
When your camera is pointing directing to toward light, you can tell how dynamic range differs, especially for the sky and buildings. See the picture from above, GoPro 7 captured delicate details of the sky and building edges.
On opposite, Osmo Pocket doesn’t have as high dynamic range as expected.
Sharpness – GoPro Hero 7 Black wins
The field of view on these two cameras are totally different, so it’s kind of hard to effectively measure sharpness. I tested these two images standing far away from objects.
Based on this test, GoPro Hero 7 appears sharper for me. Remember GoPro tends to be focused to infinity, so that’s why it display a sharper image in this scenario.
Low light – Osmo Pocket wins
These two cameras are totally different when set in low light. Hero 7 Black ISO can go up to 3200, while Osmo Pocket ISO only reach up to 1600. However, don’t get fooled by this officially claimed specs. These specs sometimes could mean nothing when you see the footage.
From the above picture, you can tell the Osmo Pocket’s image looks better than the GoPro’s. The photo noise produced by Osmo is more fine, while the noise caused by GoPro is rough.
After zooming into this testing shot, obviously OSMO Pocket is the winner. The image quality of Osmo Pocket is much better than GoPro 7 when it comes to the low light setting. Osmo has a larger aperture, so it performs better in the dim environment. In contrast, GoPro 7 has a fatal weakness of rolling shutter accompanied by EIS electronic stabilization.
